CHARLESTON — Free radon test kits are being provided by the West Virginia Department of Health in recognition of National Radon Action Month in January, as proclaimed by Gov. Jim Justice.
Radon is an odorless and invisible radioactive gas.
“We like to think that just because everything in our home looks safe that means it is,” health Secretary Sherri A. Young said. “Unfortunately, radon is something that we can’t see, can’t smell, and can’t know it’s harming us without testing. We are encouraging everyone to take a few moments to order this free kit. Doing so could potentially save your life and the lives of those you love.”
Residents can never be too safe, Jason Frame, director of the Office of Environmental Health Services, said.
“These kits are delivered quickly and come at no cost to residents, making it easier than ever to take that first step,” Frame said.
Randon is naturally released from rocks, soil and water and can get trapped inside homes and buildings, eventually building in the air. Breathing high levels of radon over time can cause health issues and lung cancer.
The Environmental Protection Agency and Surgeon General’s office estimate that radon is responsible for more than 21,000 annual lung cancer deaths in the United States, making it the second leading cause of lung cancer deaths following smoking. Most people who are suffering from radon exposure don’t display symptoms until the lung cancer is advanced, making it harder to treat, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
Residents can request a free testing kit by emailing radon@wv.gov or by calling 304-352-5039.
