Delegate-elect arrested for allegedly threatening West Virginia lawmakers

MARTINSBURG — Joseph De Soto, who was elected last month to serve District 91 in the West Virginia House of Delegates, was arrested early Thursday morning after alleging making threats to other delegates.
According to the West Virginia Division of Corrections and Rehabilitation website, de Soto, 61, was taken to Eastern Regional Jail and booked at 12:10 a.m. He was charged with making threats of terrorist acts.
“This arrest was made following an investigation that revealed Mr. de Soto had made several threatening/intimidating threats against government officials. This investigation is ongoing,” the West Virginia State Police said in a statement. “The West Virginia State Police and the West Virginia Capitol Police take all threats against government process seriously. Any person making these threats used to intimidate, disrupt, or coerce the members of our West Virginia Legislature or other governmental bodies will not be tolerated.”
De Soto, from Gerrardstown, won the Republican primary contest in May and then easily won the General Election in November.
