Nelsonville man dies following motorcycle crash

SNOWVILLE, Ohio -- A Nelsonville man died following a motorcycle crash Tuesday in Meigs County.

According to a release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, Lonnie Nelson, 65, of Nelsonville, was pronounced dead at 12:36 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Medical Center in Huntington after the wreck, which happened around 12:10 p.m. Tuesday near mile post 4 on Ohio 681.

Troopers from the patrol's Gallipolis Post responded to the crash and determined that Nelson was traveling west on Ohio 681 when he lost control and the vehicle overturned and slid down an embankment, the release said.

He and a passenger, Loretta Richards, 48, of Glouster, were thrown from the motorcycle before it left the roadway.

Richards was flown to St. Mary's for injuries sustained in the crash.

Neither occupant was wearing a helmet, the release said.

The crash remains under investigation.

Other agencies assisting included the Meigs County Sheriff's Office, Ohio Department of Transportation, Meigs County EMS, Medflight and Scipio Township Fire Department.
