PARKERSBURG -- At 8:52 a.m. Wednesday, there was a report of a structure fire on 16th Street in Parkersburg.
When the Parkersburg Fire Department arrived at the scene at 8:55 a.m., they found 2235 16th St. had a fire at the back of the house.
According to Fire Captain John Geary, while there were no injuries, the fire caused extensive damage to the house.
"The damage was pretty extensive," Geary explained.
Geary noted that the fire damage was relative to the rear of the house, there was smoke and water damage throughout the house, as the fire damaged the house's utility rooms.
Geary noted the fire started on the exterior of the back porch and the probable cause was discarded smoking material.
According to Geary, there were two occupants in the house that were inside when it caught fire. In addition to the two occupants, Geary noted there were two dogs and four to five puppies.
During an interview, Geary said bystanders passed the house the morning of the fire and knocked on the door to alert the occupants. The occupants got the puppies out of the house and the firefighters were able to locate the two dogs. Geary noted there were no injuries to either of the two occupants or the animals, but the dogs did require some oxygen after being rescued from the house.
"It went pretty smoothly," said Geary.
Geary said the fire was under control by 9:13 a.m. Geary also noted there were no injuries to any of the first responders. Geary said the fire department had 15 officers, one training officer and three new recruits at the scene.
