Wood County Commission OKs annexation of land to Parkersburg

PARKERSBURG -- The Wood County Commission approved the annexation of a piece of ground into the city that is located next to the southside Walmart store.
Connor LaVelle, municipal planner for the city of Parkersburg, appeared before the commission Thursday to get their approval to have the two parcel lot covering 11.6 acres, located adjacent to the Walmart store just across Bosley Industrial Park Drive annexed into the city.
Officials with RCDI, who own the ground, approached city officials three to four months ago about the possibility of getting the ground annexed into the city, he said.
The plan is to have them zoned B2 for general business, commercial zoning for that area that would match and support the existing Walmart and Lowes shopping center as well as FedEx and distribution to the rear.
The Parkersburg Municipal Planning Commission approved it last November and Parkersburg City Council approved it in December.
Commissioner Jimmy Colombo said when he was mayor the officials with RCDI were great to work with. Their work led to the Walmart store being located in the city limits, he added.
"It is wonderful that we have developers who would like to work with the existing government for their own improvement. It helps them, it helps the city and it helps the county," Colombo said.
LaVelle said, pending approval, the city is planning to do curb cuts along Bosley Industrial Park Drive for any future development that would occur on those parcels.
"The city would work alongside the developer or any future developers to make sure they have easy access," he said, adding having it in the city would allow the city to have zoning control and code control to make sure everything meshes well.
RCDI officials previously told city officials there is a service station planned for the front corner of the property, with other retail elsewhere on the site.
Officials did not discuss what might be planned for the site at Thursday's commission meeting.
Commissioners Blair Couch, Robert Tebay and Colombo voted unanimously to allow the annexation.
