Williamstown City Council advances water, sewer rate increase

WILLIAMSTOWN – Williamstown City Council passed an ordinance on first reading to increase water and sewer rates by 5% each during their meeting Tuesday.
The ordinance stated: "The cost of operating and maintaining the water and sewer system are in need of substantial capital Improvements and repairs."
City Attorney Blaire Hudson said a public hearing would take place prior to the next council meeting April 16. At that time, the public can comment on the ordinance.
The ordinance will be read a second time during the next meeting. If passed, it will go into effect.
Councilmember Jim Stage said the increase would be 5% on both water and sewer. Previous increases were adopted Dec. 1, 2020, and Sept. 4, 2018.
Council also recognized longtime Williamstown High School girl's basketball coach Fred Sauro, who had coached girl's basketball for 38 years at the high school.
Councilmember Mary Seufer said he wanted to not only recognize his 557 wins on the court, but the person he is off the court as well.
"To think of all the kids you have coached over the years, all the teams you have helped over the years, it must be an incredible number," he said.
Sauro replied that he had lost count years ago and thanked the council for their support.
Seufer said the award, previously known as the Pride of Williamstown, acknowledges service and contributions to the city.
"We recognize people as representatives to our community and (Sauro) fits like a glove," he said.
Mayor Paul Jordan said council planned to place portraits of previous winners such as former Mayor Jean Ford and former fire chief Joe Ruf, on the council chamber's walls to remember them.
