Walker brush fire caused by downed power line

WALKER — A brush fire caused by a downed power line burned between 40 and 50 acres in the Walker area Wednesday afternoon.

The East Wood, Deerwalk and Elizabeth volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze that was reported around 3:10 p.m. in the 3000 block of Walker Road, according to a supervisor at the Wood County 911 Center.

East Wood Chief Ron Utt said the departments were clearing the scene just before 8 p.m. Wednesday’s heavy winds exacerbated the situation.

One East Wood firefighter was transported to WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center, Utt said.

“He was dehydrated and just plum wore out,” he said.

MonPower’s outage map listed more than 300 customers in Wood County without power as of 8 p.m., with restoration estimated between 9 and 11 p.m. There were 226 in the Waverly area and 88 in Walker.

It was not immediately clear Wednesday evening whether the fire and the outages were related to the same event.

Smoke from the fire drifted into the Staunton Turnpike area, leading to initial fears of another fire, the 911 supervisor said. That proved not to be the case, but the Lubeck, Mineral Wells and Pond Creek volunteer fire departments were dispatched to another reported brush fire in the 2000 block of Chesterville Road in Mineral Wells around 6:30 p.m., she said.
