GRANTSVILLE - A Calhoun County Schools bus driver was charged Monday with driving under the influence after an accident that sent multiple students to area hospitals, the West Virginia State Police announced this morning.
A state trooper was dispatched at 6 p.m. Monday to the scene of the crash on West Virginia 16, also known as South Calhoun Highway.
The trooper determined that bus driver Jeffrey Brannon lost control of the vehicle, which was carrying 19 students for an activity, and went off the right edge of the road, the release said. Brannon overcorrected, causing the bus to roll onto its side.
Brannon, 54, of Arnoldsburg, was arrested at the scene on a charge of DUI, the release said. After being processed at the Grantsville State Police Detachment, he was arraigned in Calhoun County Magistrate Court on three counts each of DUI causing bodily injury and child neglect resulting in serious injury. Additional charges are forthcoming, the release said.
The release did not specify how many students were injured or the severity of the injuries.
Brannon is being held at the Central Regional Jail in Flatwoods on a $250,000 bond.
