MINERAL WELLS --A Mineral Wells man was killed in a single-vehicle accident Monday evening on Southern Highway.

Jody Andrew Wright, 55, of Mineral Wells, was declared dead at the scene in the vicinity of 406 Southern Highway, Mineral Wells, according to a post on the Wood County Sheriff's Department Facebook page Tuesday afternoon.

Wright was a passenger in a gray 2000 Honda Civic driven by Justin David Somerville, 40, of Elizabeth, the post said.

Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the accident at approximately 5:26 p.m. Monday.

A 911 caller reported the vehicle left the road and struck a tree and there were smoke and flames coming from it, a Monday night post said.

A property owner near the scene said the car lost control a quarter of a mile before it left the road and went down a hill.

Somerville was taken by Life Flight helicopter to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Division, where he is in serious condition due to injuries sustained in the crash, today's post said.

The sheriff's department is investigating the incident. Wood County Sheriff Rick Woodyard said there was no additional information to be released about a potential cause Tuesday evening.

Other responders on scene were the Mineral Wells, Lubeck and East Wood volunteer fire departments and St. Joseph Ambulance Service.
