Update: Sheriff’s department identifies body found in river

UPDATE: The Wood County Sheriff’s Department has identified the man whose body was found Saturday in the Ohio River as Christopher Wayne Shilling, 45, of Washington County.

The case remains under investigation by the sheriff’s department, the Marietta Police Departments and the Washington County Sheriff’s Office.

WILLIAMSTOWN – The body of a white male was discovered floating under the Interstate 77 bridge between Williamstown and Marietta, Wood County Sheriff Rick Woodyard said.

The sheriff’s department was notified of the situation at 5:37 pm today. The Marietta Police Dispatch Center received the initial report about the body.

Because the body was in the Ohio River, it is under West Virginia jurisdiction, and the sheriff’s department will be leading the investigation.

So far, the Marietta Fire and Police Departments have dispatched boats to the scene, Woodyard said.

The investigation is ongoing, Woodyard said. No additional information was immediately available.
