BELPRE -- The Belpre City Schools Board of Education held its final meeting of 2023 on Thursday at Belpre Elementary School.
The board approved a resolution to proceed with election on the question of renewal of an emergency levy.
The resolution will place the levy on the March 2024 ballot for a 10-year term for the emergency operating levy for continuing operational expenses. The $825,000 levy was first approved in May 1989 and has been continually renewed for 35 years..
The board also approved a motion to hold the 2024 organizational meeting at 5 p.m. Jan.11 at the Stone Administration Building/Early Learning Center. The regular board meeting will follow.
The board also voted to appoint Mike Miller as President Pro-Tem for the organizational Meeting.
In other action, the board approved its annual membership in the Ohio School Boards Association and approved memorandum of understandings and agreements with Zane State College Credit Plus, with Safehouse Prep and with Hocking Valley Community Residential Center.
Belpre City Schools will be closed for Christmas break from Dec. 21 to Jan. 1. Schools will also be closed Jan. 2-5 for teacher records day and professional development. Students will return to class on Jan. 8.
Board member Fred Meredith received an award and recognition from OSBA. Each year, OSBA names one board of education member from each of its five regions -- Central, Northeast, Northwest, Southeast and Southwest -- to the All-Ohio School Board. The award recognizes outstanding service to public education and represents the dedication shown by thousands of board members across the state. Meredith, who represents OSBA's Southeast Region, is in his 14th year on the Belpre City Schools board.
The district administration and board also recognized Board President Brenda Church for her seven years of service on the Board of Education, since she did not seek re-election in November, making Thursday's meeting her last on the board.
