BELPRE -- A man was arrested Monday evening after a pursuit that crossed from Parkersburg into Belpre.
A Parkersburg Police officer was responding to a separate crash at Sixth Street and Garfield Avenue just before 7:30 p.m. Monday when a 2009 Chevrolet 1500 rear-ended a 1998 Toyota Corolla nearby, Parkersburg Police Capt. R.L. Koher said. The truck continued onto Sixth Street, and the officer got into his cruiser to follow it.
The driver then made a U-turn and went back onto Garfield Avenue, fleeing from the officer at speeds reaching 80 mph, Koher said.
The chase continued on Fifth Street, with the 1500 running a red light and heading on to the Belpre Bridge, he said. Multiple Parkersburg Police cruisers followed, and Belpre Police joined the pursuit.
"The officers followed him over to his residence," Koher said.
Driver Richard Huffman, 61, stopped near his 1010 Florence St. home, then exited the vehicle and was arrested without incident, Belpre Police Chief Mike Stump said.
Huffman was charged in Belpre with fleeing and eluding, driving on a suspended license and possession of drug paraphernalia, Stump said. He was being held Tuesday in the Washington County Jail on a $10,250 bond and faces extradition to West Virginia.
Huffman will be charged in Parkersburg with fleeing in a vehicle with reckless disregard, Koher said.
The driver of the car Huffman's truck struck, a minor, was not injured, Koher said.
