The department reported the deaths of a 77-year-old woman from Roane County, a 97-year-old woman from Ohio County, an 88-year-old man from Monongalia County, an 81-year-old woman from Greenbrier County, a 79-year-old woman from Tucker County, a 74-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 76-year-old woman from Cabell County, a 91-year-old woman from Braxton County, a 78-year-old man from Braxton County, an 88-year-old woman from Ohio County and a 90-year-old man from Mason County. State health officials have said they anticipated an increase in infections with colder weather approaching. The state continues to recommend West Virginians 6 months and older stay up-to-date with updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 vaccinations. An updated 2023-24 COVID-19 shot is recommended for most people 5 years and older while those 6 months through 4 years have more specific recommendations. People who are moderately to severely immunocompromised may need additional shots for updated protection. COVID-19 vaccination is the best way to protect against severe disease, hospitalization and death from COVID-19, the department said. To find a vaccine, go to vaccines.gov, vaccinate.wv.gov or call 1-833-734-0965. The department since the end of the federal pandemic emergency in May issues a COVID-19 coronavirus update once a week on Wednesdays. Five local deaths in Wood and Jackson counties were reported in last week’s update.
