Belpre City Council works on variety of issues

By Wayne Towner 2 min read

BELPRE -- Belpre City Council held its regular meeting Monday evening.

Council approved the third reading of an ordinance updating the city's panhandling ordinance.

Council also approved the second and third readings of an amendment to a city ordinance regarding any qualified person between the ages of 21 years and 40 years being able to receive an original appointment to the Police Department.

During his report, Mayor Michael Lorentz said on Sept. 12, he attended the first Community Advisory Panel at Kraton. They invited city officials, chamber of commerce, civic groups, and others to explain their role in the community and get ideas of where they can be of service.

Lorentz said he and Safety-Service Director Connie Hoblitzell attended a meeting with the Washington County Commissioners to discuss the proposed sewer line going north. As the commission continues searching for funding, he will keep council informed of progress.

On Friday he provided a letter of support for the project and said the city asked for the same from the commission as it applies for funding at the sewer plant.

AEP has requested the city remove the hanging baskets from the Civitan Light poles due to the weight. The poles are fiberglass, and many are cracked from the weight or from vehicles striking them. Lorentz said he is working with the beautify Belpre group to find an alternate method for hanging baskets.

Two committee meetings will be held prior to the next council meeting on Oct. 9, the Finance Committee at 6:30 p.m. and the Planning and Zoning Committee at 7 p.m.
