West Virginia officials report three more COVID deaths

CHARLESTON — The death toll from the COVID-19 coronavirus in West Virginia has reached 8,170 deaths, the Department of Health and Human Resources reported Wednesday.

The state in its weekly pandemic report said another three deaths were confirmed in the last week.

Deaths confirmed were a 70-year-old woman from Kanawha County, a 96-year-old woman from Kanawha County and an 83-year-old man from Marion County.

More than 1.1 million people have died from the virus in the United States since the virus began more than three years ago, according to the World Health Organization.

Pandemic public emergencies ended in May. The state issues updates once a week on Wednesday morning.

The state of West Virginia also continues to recommend residents 6 months stay current with COVID-19 vaccinations, which at this time is one Omicron (bivalent) COVID-19 shot for most people 6 years and older. Those 6 months through 5 years have more specific recommendations.

Those 65 and older and those who are moderately to severely immunocompromised also are eligible for at least one additional Omicron COVID-19 shot for updated protection.
