POMEROY, Ohio -- A Belpre couple were arrested in connection with the murder of a Meigs County woman found stabbed outside a residence early Tuesday morning.
According to a release from Meigs County Sheriff Scott Fitch, Charles "Scott" Burton, 48, has been charged with murder, a first-degree felony, while his wife Michelle D. Burton, 53, was charged with complicity to commit murder, also a felony of the first degree.
Tina M. Johnson, 60, of Pomeroy was found dead early Tuesday morning outside a residence on Ohio 733. She had suffered multiple stab wounds and her body was sent to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office for an autopsy, the release said.
After the body was discovered, deputies executed multiple search warrants in Meigs and Washington counties and conducted interviews of witnesses and suspects, the release said.
"Everyone stepped up and demonstrated commitment to putting all the pieces of this investigation together," Fitch said in the release. "There is still a lot of work that still needs to be completed in this investigation, but I am very pleased that we were able to make two arrests in (less than) 24 hours. It's impressive what we can accomplish when everyone pitches in and shares the same goal of making Meigs County a safer place to live."
Sheriff's Capt. Frank Stewart said Wednesday that the investigation is ongoing and the office would not be releasing information about motive at this time.
Charles Burton was initially taken to the Washington County Jail and was scheduled to be transported to the Gallia County Jail Wednesday. Michelle Burton was taken to the Middleport Jail. They are scheduled to be arraigned today, the release said.
