CHARLESTON -- A county commissioner from Hardy County has announced his candidacy for treasurer of West Virginia.
Steven Schetrom of Baker, Republican, a county commissioner since January 2021, filed pre candidacy papers in September.
The campaign for treasurer will focus on growth, transparency and stewardship, Schetrom said.
"The treasurer's office needs to continue to pursue innovative solutions at the state government level which increase efficiency, and allow for greater numbers of our population to participate in economic advances in our state," Schetrom said.
Schetrom was born and raised in Hardy County where he graduated from Moorefield High School in 1995. He received a bachelor's of arts from Shepherd University in 2003 and a Master's in Business Administration with concentrations in finance and entrepreneurship in 2008 from Wake Forest University.
He has been a financial adviser since 2008 and established a registered investment advisory firm, Legacy Financial, in 2010.
Schetrom and his wife, Rachel, live in Baker with their two sons, Eli and Silas. Rachel is a teacher at East Hardy High School, Eli is a first-year cadet at West Point and Silas is a sophomore at East Hardy High School.
Schetrom is the only person so far filing pre-candidacy for treasurer, according to the office of the Secretary of State.
Pre candidacy does not bind the candidate to the office, but allows for fundraising and other campaign activities. The filing period for the 2024 election is in January.
Current Treasurer Riley Moore, a Republican, in November said he was going to run for the House of Representatives in the 2nd District where Rep. Alex Mooney, also a Republican, said he was going to run in 2024 for U.S. Senate.
