PARKERSBURG -- A local swimming coach was arrested Thursday for allegedly engaging in sexual assault and sexual abuse of girls under the age of 12.
In a release from the West Virginia State Police Crimes Against Children Unit, authorities obtained 16 total arrest warrants for David Andrew Adams in Wood County.
Between October 2018 through July 2022, Adams, the Parkersburg Sharks head swimming coach, allegedly engaged in sexual assault and sexual abuse of three juvenile females under the ages of 12 years old at the Parkersburg YMCA in Wood County, the release said.
In total, Adams was arrested on six counts of sexual abuse in the first degree, two counts of sexual assault in the first degree, and eight counts of sexual abuse by a person in a position of trust.
He was arraigned before Wood County Magistrate Judge Jody Purkey on Thursday and a surety bond of $50,000 was set. Adams posted his bond and awaits his preliminary hearing, the release said.
The North Star Child Advocacy Center assisted with the investigation of Adams. The Wood County Sheriff's Department and the Parkersburg Narcotics Task Force assisted with the investigation and arrest of Adams.

All defendants are presumed innocent until proven otherwise in a court of law, the release said.
