Point Park entry mural being installed

PARKERSBURG - Point Park will be closed to vehicular traffic for the next couple of mornings as a mural painted by members of the community is installed on the entrance.
West Virginia muralist Nichole Westfall began work at the entrance on Monday. The entrance to the park closed from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. today and will do so again from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. Thursday and Friday to accommodate the work, according to a release from the Arts Collaborative of the Mid-Ohio Valley, which is heading up the project.
At other times, people driving in and out of the park are asked to exercise caution as work will be taking place along the sides of the entrance.
Westfall designed the mural and outlined it on individual sections of paper, which were then color coded so community members could paint them during an event at the Parkersburg Art Center in February. The paint and paper are protected against ultraviolet light to allow the mural to endure over time.
According to the release, the more-than-5,000 square foot mural features a trellis styled like the entrances of the Julia Ann Historic Square District and includes local birds and flowers and other tributes to the area. It also will include the name of the park.
Installation is expected to take two weeks, with the goal to have it ready for the July 7 Point Park concert.
The project is funded with a grant from the City of Parkersburg.
