PARKERSBURG -- A Parkersburg Police cruiser sustained "significant" damage and the officer driving it suffered minor injuries during a Sunday night pursuit, Chief Matthew Board said.
Officers terminated the pursuit after losing sight of the suspect vehicle in Williamstown, he said. The vehicle, a dark-colored Chevrolet Equinox, was located Monday but a suspect has not been charged and the investigation remains underway.
Around 11 p.m. Sunday, a Parkersburg officer attempted to pull the Equinox over near the 1200 block of Market Street in downtown Parkersburg after observing defective equipment, Board said. The driver of the vehicle began to flee at high speeds, eventually approaching 100 miles per hour on Murdoch Avenue, he said.
At one point, the driver "braked the vehicle very hard in an effort to cause officers to strike him," but they avoided hitting the Equinox, Board said.
Around 55th Street and Grand Central Avenue in Vienna, a Parkersburg cruiser struck a tree and power pole and was disabled, the chief said. The officer was taken to WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center and treated and released, he said.
Williamstown Police joined the pursuit near Boaz and the city line on West Virginia 14, Board said. Officers lost sight of the vehicle as it entered Williamstown.
Early Monday morning, Williamstown Police found the vehicle, unoccupied, within the city. Board declined to identify the precise location.
