Mid-Ohio Valley marks Memorial Day with ceremonies, parades

PARKERSBURG — Memorial Day acitivities were held around the region on Monday.

American Legion Post 15 and VFW Post 1212 held a Memorial Day observance at the Veterans Plaza at City Park in Parkersburg.

Wreaths were laid for deceased veterans and an honor guard fired three rifle volleys in their honor.

“We don’t know them all, but we owe them all,” American Legion Post 15 Chaplain Joe Thorpe said.

Post 15 Commander Lee Starcher and VFW State Inspector David George read the names of 36 local veterans who have died in the past year.

In Williamstown, American Legion Post 159 headed the Williamstown Memorial Day Parade that started at 9:30 a.m. from Tomlinson park.

The parade proceeded to Riverview Cemetery on Waverly Road where a wreath for deceased veterans was laid by the Ladies Auxiliary. A rifle salute was performed along with “Taps.”

A flag disposal ceremony and lunch followed.

American Legion Post 64 conducted the Marietta parade. It began at 10 a.m. at Muskingum Park. The route went from Putnam Street, to Fifth Street (stopping at Mound Cemetery), to Wooster Street. It concluded at Oak Grove Cemetery with a Memorial Day ceremony. A luncehon followed at the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5108.
