WILLIAMSTOWN -- Williamstown City Council heard a presentation on resurfacing the tennis courts and discussed a water rate increase on Tuesday.
David Leo, Williamstown Middle/High School tennis coach, presented an estimate for the cost of resurfacing the tennis courts to council.
Leo said he started working on repairing the courts about five weeks ago and finished his repairs before the first match of the season. He said the courts were so bad that students would not have been able to play on them before his repairs.
He said tennis courts need to be resurfaced about every four years and the Williamstown courts have not been resurfaced since 2013.
After contacting three companies about the resurfacing, Leo said it is estimated to cost approximately $52,800 for the project. He plans to resurface the courts by himself, through his company DALLTX Services at the projected cost of $27,513.37. The cost to resurface the courts in 2013 was $27,000.
Leo said he has a committee that is working on fundraising to fully resurface the courts. He said they will also talk to the city and school board to see if there are any funds or materials they can spare.
Council unanimously approved a reimbursement of $1,500 to Leo for money he spent toward patching the courts.
Jim Stage, councilmember, asked for a water rate increase of 4% in the city. He said water bills in the city cost about $23 and the increase would amount to $0.25.
"Out of the 180 water departments in the state of West Virginia, we're in the bottom 20," said Stage.
Council made no decisions on his request at Tuesday's meeting.
Mayor Paul Jordan signed a proclamation for Arbor Day in Williamstown. The city will hold an Arbor Day ceremony on April 14 at Williamstown Elementary School. Councilmember Pat Peters said they will be planting a red maple tree in celebration.
The elementary school submitted 84 posters by fifth-graders to the Tree Commission to judge for their poster contest. Raeley Perdue, from Williamstown, was the winner. She said she it feels pretty good to win.
