ATHENS -- A former Nelsonville recreation director was indicted this week on two counts of theft for allegedly stealing money intended to support youth baseball and softball leagues.
David "Rudy" Schultz was indicted by an Athens County Grand Jury Monday on two fifth-degree felony counts of theft, according to a release from the Athens County Prosecutor's Office.
Schultz allegedly failed to deposit money collected for some registration fees and concession sales and took money out of an account for improper use, the release said. After his employment with the city, he allegedly took more than $2,500 from the fundraising efforts of the organization Batting 4 Kids.
Schultz will be arraigned today in Athens County Common Pleas Court in front of Judge Patrick Lang.
"Sadly, this is another example of theft from youth activities in our area," Prosecutor Keller J. Blackburn said. "The constant vulnerability of funds designed to better our children's experience is disappointing. I urge organizations and local governments to set up safeguards and checks and balances to reduce this in the future."
In the release, Blackburn thanked his office's Chief Investigator Jay Barrett, Nelsonville City Auditor Taylor Sappington, former Nelsonville City Manager Tracy Galway, Nelsonville Police Chief Devon Tolliver, Nelsonville Home and Savings Bank and concerned parents of Nelsonville area youth.
