BELPRE -- The Belpre City Schools Board of Education is preparing for the 2023 graduation at Belpre High School.

At its monthly meeting Thursday, the board approved the 84 students for graduation with the Class of 2023.

The approval is contingent upon the completion of all graduation requirements, payment of fees and fines, and all other responsibilities as required by teachers and the high school administration.

Superintendent Jeff Greenley said this year's commencement ceremony will be 2 p.m. May 21 in the high school gymnasium due to repair work being done on the school's track. He added that the track project is progressing better than expected due to the weather and it could be ready for a mid-July ribbon cutting instead of the previously estimated August completion.

Greenley added that environmental studies leading to demolition are nearly complete for the old bowling alley property at BHS and are progressing for the old elementary school building on the campus.

The board also approved personnel matters, which included the resignations and retirements, along with employments, such as the naming of Tyler Schaad as the new principal at BHS in the next school year. Schaad is currently assistant principal. The new contract will run from Aug. 1, 2023, to July 31, 2026.

In other business, the board approved:

* Accepting a donation of $500 from J.D. Byrider to Class of 2024.

* Using Student Protective Agency, 300 Coshocton Ave., Mount Vernon, as provider of student insurance for the 2023-2024school year.

* Agreements approving Health/Prescription Insurance effective July 1, 2023, through UMR Portage Area School Consortium; a renewal of school dental insurance with Trustmark effective July 1, 2023; and renewal of school vision insurance with VSP effective July 1, 2023.

* Memorandums of Understanding between Marietta College and Belpre City School District pertaining to Pre-Service Teachers; and between Belpre City School District and Fort Frye Local School District pertaining to shared transportation services.
