CHARLESTON -- Another 32 deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus have been confirmed in West Virginia in the past week by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The youngest of the deaths was a 35-year-old man from Cabell County, the department said.
The additional 32 raises the death toll since the pandemic started three years ago to 8,043 people in West Virginia.
Deaths confirmed on Wednesday morning, in addition to the 35-year-old resident from Cabell, include a 75-year-old man from Kanawha County, an 88-year-old woman from Ohio County, an 87-year-old woman from Monongalia County, an 89-year-old woman from Clay County, a 79-year-old man from Marion County, a 71-year-old man from Cabell County, a 70-year-old woman from Marion County, a 76-year-old woman from Monongalia County, an 88-year-old woman from Kanawha County, an 88-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 50-year-old woman from Raleigh County, an 88-year-old woman from Ohio County, a 62-year-old man from Mason County, a 70-year-old man from Randolph County, a 74-year-old man from Harrison County, a 56-year-old man from Wayne County, a 68-year-old woman from Marion County, a 98-year-old woman from Raleigh County, an 83-year-old woman from Kanawha County, a 91-year-old woman from Cabell County, a 92-year-old man from Jefferson County, an 86-year-old woman from Raleigh County, a 94-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 67-year-old man from Mason County, a 73-year-old man from Jefferson County, a 73-year-old woman from Raleigh County, a 78-year-old woman from Upshur County, an 83-year-old woman from Braxton County, a 53-year-old woman from Wyoming County, a 63-year-old woman from Braxton County and an 80-year-old man from Monongalia County.
Updates by the department on COVID-19 have been reduced to once a week on Wednesday mornings. The federal public health emergency will expire in May.
Wirt County is the only county ranked medium-risk on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Community Threat Level. All other counties in the region are ranked low.
Among recommendations for areas marked medium are to wear a mask if at high risk of getting sick.
Residents 6 months and older are eligible for COVID-19 vaccination.
