West Virginia DHHR reports fifteen COVID deaths in past week

CHARLESTON -- Fifteen people have died from the COVID-19 virus since the last update on Feb. 22, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported Wednesday.

The deaths include a 100-year-old woman from Roane County and an 87-year-old woman from Wetzel County, the department said in its weekly update released on Wednesday morning.

The state also confirmed the deaths of an 89-year-old woman from Kanawha County, a 79-year-old woman from Nicholas County, a 67-year-old woman from Wyoming County, a 95-year-old man from Nicholas County, an 80-year-old woman from Jefferson County, a 90-year-old man from Morgan County, a 72-year-old woman from Berkeley County, a 78-year-old woman from Upshur County, a 70-year-old woman from Raleigh County, a 92-year-old man from Boone County, an 83-year-old woman from Cabell County, a 60-year-old woman from McDowell County and a 60-year-old woman from Brooke County.

The 15 deaths in the past week have raised the total deaths since the pandemic started about three years ago to 7,950 residents of West Virginia.

COVID-19 updates are now issued Wednesday mornings, once a week, because the federal public health emergency will expire on May 11.

The state reported 212 people are in a hospital with 24 in an intensive care unit and nine on ventilators.

Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer, Jackson, Pleasants, Ritchie, Roane, Tyler, Wetzel, Wirt and Wood counties are ranked low on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention community threat levels.

Residents in areas ranked low are encouraged to stay up-to-date with COVID-19 vaccines and avoid those who are infected, among other recommendations.
