CHARLESTON -- A resident from Wood County was confirmed among the deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus reported on Tuesday morning by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The department reported another 13 deaths from the virus in the 24-hour period from Monday morning to Tuesday morning, raising the total number of deaths since the pandemic started three years ago to 7,849 residents.
Twenty-seven deaths have been reported so far this week by the Department of Health and Human Resources. The youngest on Tuesday morning was 51.
Confirmed deaths on Tuesday included a 72-year-old woman from Wood County, a 74-year-old man from Wayne County, an 88-year-old man from Raleigh County, a 71-year-old man from Cabell County, a 51-year-old man from Marion County, a 74-year-old woman from Raleigh County, a 75-year-old man from Raleigh County, a 69-year-old man from Fayette County, a 60-year-old woman from Raleigh County, a 97-year-old woman from Kanawha County, a 61-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 64-year-old woman from Kanawha County and an 85-year-old man from Marshall County.
"I am deeply saddened to report the loss of more West Virginians," said Dr. Jeffrey H. Coben, Interim DHHR Cabinet Secretary. "I appreciate the continued dedication of health care personnel who have gone above and beyond to care for individuals hospitalized with COVID-19."
Active statewide cases totaled were 836 on Tuesday, down from 901 on Monday morning. Another 256 new cases were received in the 24-hour period from Monday's pandemic report, the department said.
Active cases in local counties (previous report) were: Calhoun 0 (0), Doddridge 3 (3), Gilmer 0 (0), Jackson 9 (14), Pleasants 2 (2), Ritchie 3 (2), Roane 5 (6), Tyler 1 (1), Wetzel 4 (6), Wirt 1 (1), Wood 24 (27).
The number of yellow counties dropped from 13 on Monday to six on Tuesday morning on the County Alert System Map that is based on infection rates and percent positivity. Yellow is second lowest on the scale.
All other counties are green, the lowest level.
The only yellow county in this region is Doddridge.
The state reported 233 people were in the hospital with COVID-19 complications, of which 37 are in an intensive care unit and 12 are on a ventilator.
Six pediatric cases were reported with one in an ICU.
