CHARLESTON -- Four more deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus were reported Wednesday morning by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The state has confirmed the deaths of a 79-year-old woman from Kanawha County, an 84-year-old man from Ohio County, a 92-year-old man from Monongalia County and a 90-year-old woman from Marion County. Thirteen deaths have been reported this week.
The death toll from COVID since the pandemic began was at 7,917 in West Virginia.
"The families of these residents are in our thoughts," Dr. Jeffrey H. Coben, interim department secretary, said. "Vaccines and boosters are our best defense against severe outcomes from COVID-19."
Active cases were at 908 on Wednesday, 25 fewer than on Tuesday. Another 207 positive cases were received between the Tuesday and Wednesday pandemic reports, the department said.
Current active cases in local counties (previous day) were: Calhoun 0 (0), Doddridge 1 (1), Gilmer 5 (4), Jackson 9 (9), Pleasants 2 (1), Ritchie 4 (5), Roane 10 (9), Tyler 2 (2), Wetzel 2 (2), Wirt 2 (3), Wood 22 (23).
Gilmer and Roane are the only yellow counties in the region on the County Alert System Map that is based on infection rates and percent positivity. Yellow is the second lowest level to green
Five counties in the state are yellow and all others are green.
Hospital cases statewide were at 196 with 24 patients in an intensive care unit and seven on ventilators. Six pediatric cases with two in an ICU were reported.
