CHARLESTON -- Another 14 deaths between Wednesday and Thursday morning were confirmed by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
Three of the deaths were residents from Jackson and Roane counties.
The death toll on Thursday was at 7,836 people since the pandemic started three years ago. Forty-four people since Monday have been confirmed as dying from COVID-19 related complications, including a 3-month old girl, the youngest fatality from the virus in West Virginia.
Thursday's deaths included a 67-year-old man from Jackson County, a 52-year-old woman from Jackson County, an 83-year-old woman from Roane County, a 93-year-old woman from Monongalia County, a 76-year-old man from Logan County, an 83-year-old woman from Berkeley County, an 82-year-old man from Nicholas County, a 68-year-old woman from Clay County, an 82-year-old man from Monongalia County, an 88-year-old woman from Ohio County, a 71-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 49-year-old woman from Raleigh County, a 53-year-old man Fayette County and a 78-year-old woman from Raleigh County.
"COVID-19 has left a devastating impact on our communities," Dr. Jeffrey H. Coben, interim secretary of the Department of Health and Human Resources, said. "We send our condolences to the families who have lost loved ones and remind West Virginians to stay up-to-date on their COVID vaccines and boosters."
The state reported 830 active cases of the virus on Thursday, six less than Wednesday, and another 279 new cases received between Wednesday and Thursday mornings.
Current active cases in local counties (previous day) are: Calhoun 1 (1), Doddridge 1 (1), Gilmer 0 (0), Jackson 12 (11), Pleasants 1 (1), Ritchie 7 (5), Roane 4 (4), Tyler 0 (0), Wetzel 3 (4), Wirt 1 (1), Wood 18 (23).
Ten counties are yellow on the County Alert System Map based on infection rates. Yellow is second lowest to green, of which all other counties are ranked green on the map.
Ritchie and Wirt are the only yellow counties in this region.
The state reported 249 people were in the hospital with COVID-19 complications, of which 35 are in an intensive care unit and 12 are on a ventilator.
Nine pediatric cases were reported with one in an ICU.
