CHARLESTON -- A Ritchie County resident was among the five COVID-19 coronavirus deaths between Tuesday and Wednesday reported by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The state reported the deaths of an 84-year-old man from Ritchie County, a 90-year-old woman from Preston County, an 80-year-old woman from Morgan County, an 81-year-old man from Kanawha County and an 84-year-old man from Jefferson County.
The five additional confirmations raises the death toll to 7,790 residents since the pandemic started three years ago.
"Our thoughts are with the families and friends of these West Virginians," Dr. Jeffrey H. Coben, interim secretary of the department, said. "Let's pledge to stay current on COVID vaccines and boosters to help prevent further hospitalizations and deaths."
Statewide active cases were at 911 on Wednesday. While below 1,000, Wednesday's count was 51 higher than on Tuesday.
The state also reported 389 new cases were received between the Tuesday and Wednesday pandemic updates.
Current active cases per local county (previous day) are: Calhoun 2 (1), Doddridge 2 (2), Gilmer 1 (0), Jackson 17 (16), Pleasants 1 (2), Ritchie 2 (2), Roane 12 (11), Tyler 4 (5), Wetzel 1 (2), Wirt 1 (2), Wood 23 (27).
All counties in the region are green, the lowest level, on the County Alert System Map.
Thirteen counties across the state are yellow, second lowest, on the map. No counties are gold, orange or red.
The state reported 267 people are in a hospital with 37 in an intensive care unit and nine on a ventilator. Four pediatric cases were reported with one in an ICU.
