CHARLESTON -- Another 14 people since Friday died from the COVID-19 coronavirus in West Virginia, the Department of Health and Human Resources reported Monday morning.
The confirmed deaths included an 85-year-old man from Wetzel County and residents aged 56 to 93 in Nicholas, Kanawha, Putnam, Wayne, Mingo, Harrison, Mercer and Raleigh counties. The 56-year old was a man from Wayne County.
The death toll in West Virginia since the pandemic started three years ago was at 7,836 people on Monday.
"The loss of loved ones and stresses related to COVID-19 can take an emotional toll," Dr. Jeffrey H. Coben, interim secretary of the department, said. "If you are concerned for your mental health, reach out to your health care provider and utilize resources such as those listed on our website."
Active cases across the state were at 901 on Monday morning, down 33 from the Friday pandemic report. Cases have been fluctuating up and down.
The state also reported 649 new cases were received since the Friday report, however cases are unreported if found in in-home tests.
Current active cases in local counties are (previous report): Calhoun 0 (0), Doddridge 3 (3), Gilmer 0 (0), Jackson 14 (11), Pleasants 2 (4), Ritchie 2 (3), Roane 6 (8), Tyler 1 (3), Wetzel 6 (5), Wirt 1 (2), Wood 27 (32).
Thirteen counties are yellow on the County Alert System Map based on five levels of severity of infection rates and percent positivity. Yellow is second lowest to green.
Doddridge is the only yellow county in the region. All other counties are green in West Virginia.
The state reported 236 people were in the hospital with COVID-19 complications, of which 30 are in an intensive care unit and 11 are on a ventilator.
