CHARLESTON -- COVID-19 cases continue to fluctuate in West Virginia where the Department of Health and Human Resources on Thursday reported 889 active cases statewide.
No deaths were reported in the 24-hour period between Wednesday and Thursday's pandemic reports from the department. The death toll since the pandemic began remained at 7,790 on Thursday.
The department also reported another 307 new cases of the virus have been received since the last report on Wednesday. The pandemic high in the number of infections was more than 21,000 in January 2022.
Current active cases in local counties are (previous day): Calhoun 3 (2), Doddridge 3 (2), Gilmer 2 (1), Jackson 14 (17), Pleasants 1 (1), Ritchie 0 (2), Roane 9 (12), Tyler 6 (4), Wetzel 1 (1), Wirt 0 (1), Wood 25 (23).
Calhoun is the only yellow county in the region on the County Alert System Map based on infection rates and percent positivity. No counties in the area were yellow, second lowest on the map, on Wednesday.
Twelve counties in the state are yellow. All others are green.
Counties are ranked in five levels of green, yellow, gold, orange and red in ascending levels of infection rate or percent positivity. Counties are ranked on the lower measurement of percent positivity or infection rate.
Percent positivity in Calhoun is in the orange zone, in yellow in Doddridge and in gold in Jackson.
The infection rate is at the yellow level in Tyler and Gilmer counties.
Statewide hospitalizations were 261 on Thursday with 40 in an intensive care unit and eight on a ventilator. The numbers on Wednesday were 267, 37 and nine, respectively.
Three pediatric cases were reported with one in an ICU.
