CHARLESTON -- Three residents from Wood and Jackson counties were COVID-19 coronavirus deaths reported Wednesday by the Department of Health and Human Resources.
The department reported the deaths of a 55-year-old woman and an 87-year-old female from Jackson County and a 72-year-old man from Wood County.
At least 79 residents have died from the virus since Jan. 1. The 12 additional deaths reported on Wednesday raises the death toll since the pandemic started three years ago to 7,761 residents.
The department Wednesday confirmed the deaths of a 93-year-old woman from Raleigh County, a 78-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 73-year-old woman from Preston County, a 90-year-old woman from Greenbrier County, a 68-year-old man from Preston County, a 77-year-old woman from Cabell County, an 80-year-old woman from Kanawha County, a 64-year-old woman from Logan County and a 90-year-old woman from Greenbrier County.
"We mourn with all families who have lost loved ones to COVID-19," Dr. Jeffrey H. Coben, M.D., interim department secretary, said. "Vaccines and boosters are free and available across the state, and can help save lives."
Total active cases were 1,079 on Wednesday, a drop of 90 since the 1,169 reported on Tuesday. The department also reported 361 new cases have been received between the Tuesday and Wednesday reports.
Current active cases in local counties (previous report) are: Calhoun 0 (0), Doddridge 1 (4), Gilmer 1 (2), Jackson 17 (23), Pleasants 1 (1), Ritchie 2 (4), Roane 10 (13), Tyler 5 (6), Wetzel (12), Wirt 1 (1), Wood 35 (38).
Seventeen counties are yellow on the County Alert System Map that measures infection rate and percent positivity on a scale of green, yellow, gold, orange and red. No counties are gold, orange or red, the highest alert level.
Wetzel, Tyler and Roane are the only yellow counties in this region.
The designation is based on the lower of the percent positivity and infection rate measurements. The measurement for percent positivity is in at the red level in Jackson County.
The state reported 308 people are in a hospital with 53 in an intensive care unit and 12 on a ventilator. Four pediatric cases were reported with one in an ICU.
