Active COVID-19 cases trend downward; no new deaths reported

CHARLESTON -- Active COVID-19 coronavirus cases in West Virginia continued downward, according to the Tuesday morning update from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.

While active cases of the virus have fluctuated, the state reported 787 as of Tuesday morning, down from the 854 reported in Monday morning's pandemic update. Cases were last around this level at the end of November.

The state also reported 250 new cases were received in the 24-hour period between the Monday and Tuesday reports.

No deaths were reported between Monday and Tuesday. The death toll remains at 7,808 as of Tuesday.

Current active cases in local counties (previous day) are: Calhoun 0 (1), Doddridge 0 (1), Gilmer 0 (1), Jackson 13 (12), Pleasants 3 (1), Ritchie 2 (2), Roane 6 (6), Tyler 3 (7), Wetzel 3 (1), Wirt 0 (0), Wood 32 (32)

All counties in the region are green, the lowest level on the County Alert System Map that measures infection rates and percent positivity in five levels of severity. Thirteen counties in the state are yellow and the remainder are green.

A county's color code is based on the lower of the two measurements of infection rate and percent positivity. The levels in ascending order are green, yellow, gold, orange and red.

The measurement for percent positivity falls in the orange zone in Jackson County and yellow in Wood County. The measurement for infection rate falls at the yellow level in Pleasants and Ritchie counties.

The state reported 258 patients in a hospital with 37 in an intensive care unit and 11 on a ventilator. Five pediatric cases with two in an ICU were reported.

Residents 6 months and older are eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations. All individuals 6 months and older should receive a primary series of vaccination, the initial set of shots that teaches the body to recognize and fight the virus that causes COVID-19. At this time, one Omicron booster shot (bivalent) is recommended for most people 6 months and older who completed the primary series and their most recent COVID-19 shot was at least two months ago.
