CHARLESTON -- Eight more people including a Wood County resident are among the deaths from the COVID-19 coronavirus reported Monday by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The eight were reported since the Friday pandemic update by the state, raising the death toll to 7,646 since the pandemic began more than two years ago.
The department has confirmed the deaths of an 83-year-old man from Wood County, a 61-year-old woman from Monongalia County, a 75-year-old man from Boone County, a 47-year-old woman from Marion County, a 91-year-old woman from Putnam County, a 50-year-old woman from Boone County, a 56-year-old man from Fayette County and an 81-year-old man from Wyoming County.
"We must work to prevent COVID from taking more of our loved ones," said department Secretary Bill J. Crouch. "The most effective way to do that is by getting vaccinated and staying up to date on boosters."
Statewide, the department reported 944 active COVID-19 cases with 718 new cases received since the last report on Friday.
Current active cases in local counties are (previous report): Calhoun 2 (2); Doddridge 0 (1); Gilmer 3 (3); Jackson 9 (15); Pleasants 1 (4); Ritchie 8 (6); Roane 13 (22); Tyler 3 (7); Wetzel 12 (10); Wirt 0 (1); Wood 42 (42).
Fourteen counties are yellow on the County Alert System Map that measures infections and percent positivity and rates counties green, yellow, gold, orange and red. All other counties are green.
Ritchie, Gilmer, Roane and Wetzel are yellow in this region.
Hospitalizations dropped from 190 on Friday to 179 on Monday, the state said.
Twenty-nine people are in an intensive care unit and 13 are on a ventilator.
One pediatric case in an ICU was reported.
