West Virginia officials report five new COVID deaths
CHARLESTON — Another five deaths attributed to the COVID-19 coronavirus were reported Wednesday by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The deaths raise the total since the pandemic started in 2020 to 7,636 residents as of Wednesday.
The department confirmed the deaths of a 74-year-old man from Raleigh County, a 71-year-old woman from Kanawha County, a 90-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 70-year-old man from Summers County and a 93-year-old woman from Kanawha County.
“The pain of grief runs long and deep,” department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. “Staying up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccines and boosters is the most powerful way to prevent further loss of life.”
Statewide active cases were at 833 on Wednesday, an increase of 10 from Tuesday, the department said. Another 833 new cases were received from Tuesday to Wednesday, the state said.
Current active cases in local counties as of Wednesday (previous report) were: Calhoun 5 (6); Doddridge 3 (2); Gilmer 2 (2); Jackson 23 (29); Pleasants 4 (4); Ritchie 7 (5); Roane 18 (18), Tyler 7 (3); Wetzel 6 (2); Wirt 1 (1); Wood 33 (30).
Five of the 11 counties in the state that are yellow on the County Alert System Map, the second lowest to green in terms of infections and spread, are from this region: Pleasants, Ritchie, Jackson, Roane and Calhoun.
The state reported 157 patients with COVID-19 complications are in the hospital with 19 in an intensive care unit and nine on a ventilator. Two pediatric patients were reported with one in an ICU.
