West Virginia COVID cases fluctuate; no new deaths reported

CHARLESTON — Active cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus continued to fluctuate in West Virginia, according to the Wednesday morning update from the Department of Health and Human Resources.

The department reported 941 active cases across the state, up eight from 933 on Tuesday. Another 381 new cases of the virus were received since the last update, the department said.

No deaths were reported in the 24-hour period between Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. The death count remained at 7,649 since the pandemic began more than 30 months ago.

Current active cases in local counties are (previous report): Calhoun 2 (2); Doddridge 0 (0); Gilmer 1 (3); Jackson 9 (8); Pleasants 2 (2); Ritchie 10 (10); Roane 8 (13); Tyler 5 (4); Wetzel 10 (14); Wirt 1 (0); Wood 41 (47).

Ten counties are ranked yellow, second lowest in terms of infections and percent positivity, on the County Alert System Map. In this region, Wetzel, Tyler and Ritchie are yellow.

All other counties are green, the lowest level.

Hospitalizations dropped nine to 172 on Wednesday with 25 patients in an intensive care unit and 10 on a ventilator. Two pediatric cases with one in an ICU also were reported.
