Three local people among latest COVID deaths

CHARLESTON — Three of the four deaths attributed to the COVID-19 coronavirus reported on Tuesday were from this region, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said.

The state reported the deaths of a 77-year-old man from Roane County, an 85-year-old woman from Jackson County, a 78-year-old man from Wood County and a 63-year-old man from Cabell County.

The death counts as of Tuesday in Wood County were at 370, 146 in Jackson County and 47 in Roane County. Wood County is fourth highest in total deaths behind Kanawha with 833, Cabell at 424 and Raleigh at 399.

Statewide, the total number of deaths since the pandemic began in 2020 was at 7,631 residents.

“Don’t wait until the new year to take charge of your health,” said Bill J. Crouch, DHHR Cabinet Secretary. “Make the decision today to protect yourself, your family and your community by receiving the COVID-19 vaccine and boosters.”

The department Tuesday reported 823 active cases statewide with 253 new cases received since the Monday pandemic report.

Current active cases in local counties as of Tuesday (previous report) were: Calhoun 6 (5); Doddridge 2 (3); Gilmer 2 (3); Jackson 29 (32); Pleasants 4 (3); Ritchie 5 (7); Roane 18 (16), Tyler 3 (4); Wetzel 2 (4); Wirt 1 (1); Wood 30 (36).

Four of the 10 counties in the state that are yellow on the County Alert System map are in this area, Pleasants, Jackson, Roane and Calhoun. Yellow is second lowest to green.

All other counties are green in West Virginia.

The classification is based on the lower of either infection rate or percent positivity. The percent positivity is in the red zone, the highest level of infection rates, in Jackson, Roane and Calhoun counties and in the mid-level gold area in Pleasants County.

The state reported 166 patients with COVID-19 complications are in the hospital with 24 in an intensive care unit and nine on a ventilator. Three pediatric patients were reported with one in an ICU.
