Women’s suffrage to be discussed at library

PARKERSBURG — The story of women’s suffrage in West Virginia will be the topic of a presentation from 6-7 p.m. Nov. 28 at the South Parkersburg Branch of the Parkersburg-Wood County Public Library.

Renate Pore, who has a doctorate in history and is the treasurer of the West Virginia Center on Budget and Policy, will discuss the wild and rowdy route that West Virginia took to gain suffrage which turned the tide of public opinion across the United States and resulted in the passage of the 19th Amendment.

Her research into the West Virginia Legislative Journals in the late 19th and early 20th century was eventually adapted for the stage as a play, “Failure is Impossible: West Virginia’s Struggle for Women’s Suffrage.”

Mrs. Thomas Peadro of Parkersburg was among the leaders of the movement, along with 115 other physicians, teachers, college professors, ministers, newspaper editors, lawyers, administrators, business owners and an actress. These women, whose husbands were in the Legislature and supported the women’s right to vote, were mostly from Wheeling, Fairmont, Morgantown, Huntington and Parkersburg.

The program is sponsored by Strong Women Allied for Good and Wendy Tuck, who serves on Parkersburg City Council from District 4.

The presentation is open to everyone.

Pore, a retired public health professional, has a PhD in history from West Virginia University and a master’s in public health from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. A Fulbright Scholar, she was director of the Governor’s Commission on Children and Families and executive director of Health Care Planning Commission and the Tri-State Community Health Center at the Department of Public Health.

Starting at $2.99/week.
