CHARLESTON -- Active COVID-19 cases in the state were below 1,000 again Monday, despite 588 new cases being reported over the weekend, according to the latest data from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The agency reported 926 active cases in Monday morning's update, down from 1,046 on Friday.
Active cases in local counties Monday (Friday) were: Calhoun, 1 (1); Doddridge, 2 (1); Gilmer, 4 (5); Jackson, 10 (12); Pleasants, 6 (3); Ritchie, 4 (5); Roane, 6 (5); Tyler, 5 (4); Wetzel, 10 (16); Wirt, 1 (2); Wood, 59 (65).
Wood, Pleasants and Wetzel counties remained yellow on the state's County Alert System map, joined by Tyler County. Yellow is the second-lowest category on the map, which places counties in one of five tiers based on the infection rate per 100,000 people or percentage of tests coming back positive in the previous seven days, whichever is lower. Eleven counties in the state were yellow, with the other 44 green, the lowest level.
Two deaths were attributed to the virus -- a 48-year-old woman and 84-year-old man, both from Kanawha County -- bringing the statewide total to 7,536.
"Staying up to date on the COVID vaccine and booster shot is the single best thing you can do to protect yourself and your family," DHHR Cabinet Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "We extend our sympathies to these families for their profound loss."
Statewide hospitalizations with COVID dipped slightly to 141, with 16 in intensive care units and seven on ventilators. That's down from 145 hospitalizations and 23 in ICUs on Friday, with the number of ventilator patients up from five. There were six pediatric hospitalizations Monday, up from four on Friday. One pediatric patient was on a ventilator.
