CHARLESTON -- Active cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus again slightly decreased between Wednesday and Thursday in Wood County and across the state, the Department of Health and Human Resources reported Thursday morning.
Thirty-one active cases were reported in Wood County, the largest county in the region and the fifth largest in the state, down seven from Wednesday, according to the Thursday morning pandemic update from the department.
The state reported 765 statewide active cases of the virus, 33 less than Wednesday, while another 243 positive cases were received between the Wednesday and Thursday morning pandemic updates.
Six counties are yellow, second lowest grade in terms of infection and percent positivity, on the County Alert System Map. Pleasants and Tyler counties are the only yellow counties in the region and join Hancock, Braxton, Pendleton and Mingo counties as yellow counties.
All other counties are green, the lowest level.
The rating is based on the lower measurement of the infection rate and percent positivity. In Pleasants County, the percent positivity is in the red zone, the highest level of alert, but yellow in the measurement for infection rate.
Active cases in other local counties on Thursday (previous report) were: Calhoun, 4 (3); Doddridge, 2 (2); Gilmer, 5 (6); Jackson, 3 (5); Pleasants, 8 (11); Ritchie, 3 (4); Roane, 8 (9); Tyler, 7 (7); Wetzel, 6 (4); Wirt, 1 (1).
No deaths were reported in the 24-hour period between Wednesday and Thursday mornings. The death total since the pandemic began more than 30 months ago was at 7,538 residents in West Virginia.
The count in Wood County is 364 deaths caused by the virus.
Most of the deaths in Wood County were in the 71 and older age range, 243 residents. The statistics in other age groups are: 61-70, 64; 51-60, 39; 41-50, 11; 31-40, 6; 26-30, 1; 0-25, 0.
Wood County as of Thursday was in the top 5 in deaths in West Virginia; Kanawha, 821; Cabell, 415; Raleigh, 394; and Berkeley, 329. The least number of deaths were in Calhoun, 15, and Gilmer, 22.

Statewide COVID hospitalizations on Thursday were at 141 with 19 in an intensive care unit and nine on a ventilator. Two pediatric cases with two on ventilators were reported.
West Virginians 6 months and older are eligible for COVID-19 vaccinations. All individuals ages 6 months and older should receive a primary series of vaccination, the initial set of shots that teaches the body to recognize and fight the virus that causes COVID-19, the state said. At this time, one Omicron booster shot (bivalent) is recommended for everyone ages 5 years and older who completed the primary series, and their most recent COVID-19 shot was at least two months ago.
