West Virginia reports four new COVID deaths; active cases remain below 700
CHARLESTON — Statewide active cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus remained under 700 on Wednesday while another four residents were confirmed as deaths from the virus, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources reported.
The department in its Wednesday morning pandemic update said there were 664 active cases, up from the 637 posted in Tuesday’s report. The state also reported 249 new cases of the virus were received in the 24-hour period between Tuesday and Wednesday morning.
While there are more yellow counties on the County Alert System Map, which is based on infection rates, Tyler County has upgraded from yellow to green, the lowest level of alert.
Pleasants County is the only yellow county in the region. All others are green.
Nine counties are yellow, second lowest to green, up two from Tuesday. In addition to Pleasants, also yellow are Hancock, Taylor, Grant, Hardy, Randolph, Clay, Mason and Monroe counties.
Active cases in local counties on Wednesday (last report) were: Calhoun, 2 (2); Doddridge, 0 (1); Gilmer, 4 (3); Jackson, 10 (10); Pleasants, 6 (5); Ritchie, 3 (1); Roane, 7 (4); Tyler, 3 (6); Wetzel, 6 (7); and Wirt, 1 (0); Wood 28 (30).
Four more deaths have been confirmed from the virus, raising the death toll to 7,594 residents.
The department has confirmed the deaths of an 80-year-old woman from Wyoming County, an 80-year-old woman from Summers County, a 71-year-old man from Mingo County and a 96-year-old woman from Cabell County.
Condolences were expressed by department Secretary Bill J. Crouch.
“As the holidays approach, I send my condolences to families who have lost a loved one due to COVID-19,” Crouch said. “I urge West Virginians to receive a vaccine or booster to protect themselves and loved ones from severe outcomes from COVID.”
The state reported 116 patients are in a hospital with 22 in an intensive care unit and 11 on ventilators. Four pediatric cases with one in an ICU and on a ventilator were reported.
