CHARLESTON -- Two residents from Wood and Jackson counties are among the six confirmed COVID-19 coronavirus deaths reported on Monday by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
The department on Monday reported the deaths of a 72-year-old woman from Jackson County, a 73-year-old man from Wood County, a 58-year-old woman from Putnam County, a 69-year-old man from Mingo County, a 96-year-old woman from Raleigh County and a 90-year-old man from Clay County.
The six additional confirmations since the last report on Friday raises the death toll since the pandemic began to 7,587 residents in West Virginia.
"We mourn the loss of these West Virginians and send our condolences to their loved ones," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "I urge you to schedule your COVID vaccine or booster today."
Since the pandemic began, 366 residents in Wood County and 145 in Jackson County have died.
Among the 55 counties, Wood County is fourth highest in deaths behind Kanawha at 828, Cabell at 419 and Raleigh at 397.
Four of the lowest five counties are in this region, Calhoun with 15, Doddridge at 19, Gilmer at 23 and Wirt with 26. Pendleton County also has 23 deaths.
Statewide active cases continue to fluctuate.
On Monday morning, the department reported 666 active COVID-19 cases statewide, a decrease from the 809 reported on Friday. The state also reported 448 new cases have been received since the Friday report.
Pleasants and Tyler counties are among the five statewide with Clay, Grant and Mineral in the yellow zone on the County Alert System Map that is based on infection rates with zones in progressive severity, green, yellow, gold, orange and red.
Classification in the zone is based on the lower reading of either infection rate or percent positivity. Pleasants County's percent positivity falls in the orange category.
Gilmer was in the yellow zone for infection rate.
Active cases in local counties on Monday (last report) were: Calhoun, 1 (2); Doddridge, 1 (3); Gilmer, 3 (5); Jackson, 9 (8); Pleasants, 5 (5); Ritchie, 1 (7); Roane, 5 (6); Tyler, 5 (5); Wetzel, 7 (8); and Wirt, 0 (1); Wood 34 (42).
The state reported 122 patients are in a hospital with 18 in an intensive care unit and four on ventilators. One pediatric case was reported.
