Wood County man among latest COVID-19 deaths

PARKERSBURG — Another 10 deaths from COVID-19, including a 57-year-old man from Wood County, have been confirmed in West Virginia, the Department of Health and Human Resources reported on Tuesday.
In addition to the Wood County resident, the state has confirmed the deaths of a 42-year-old man from Taylor County, a 56-year-old woman from Nicholas County, a 68-year-old woman from Raleigh County, a 78-year-old man from Cabell County, a 71-year-old woman from Cabell County, a 65-year-old man from McDowell County, an 85-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 71-year-old man from Summers County and a 66-year-old man from Upshur County.
The state has reported 361 deaths so far in Wood County.
Twenty deaths statewide have been reported this week. Ten also were reported on Monday.
The state’s death count as of Tuesday was 7,436 since the pandemic began in March 2020.
“We are saddened by the loss of more West Virginians and send our deepest sympathies,” DHHR Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. “Let’s help prevent further deaths by staying current on COVID-19 vaccines and boosters.”
Statewide active cases on Tuesday were 1,028, a drop of nearly 100 from Monday when 1,125 cases were reported. Active cases generally have been trending downward.
Only seven counties are yellow on the County Alert System map. All other counties are green, the lowest level based on infection rates. Yellow is the second lowest.
The yellow counties are Tyler, Harrison, Taylor, Barbour, Pendleton, Pocahontas and Wyoming.
Classification on the map is based on the lower of two measurements, infection rate and percent positivity. In Wood and Wirt counties, the percent positivity and infection rate are in the yellow zone, respectively.
Active cases in local counties on Tuesday (Monday) were: Calhoun, 2 (3); Doddridge, 3 (4); Gilmer, 4 (4); Jackson, 7 (4); Pleasants, 2 (1); Ritchie, 2 (1); Roane, 6 (5); Tyler, 6 (6); Wetzel, 4 (6); Wirt, 1 (1); and Wood, 49 (56).
The DHHR reported 197 people statewide are in the hospital with COVID, with 30 in an intensive care unit and 12 on a ventilator. Two pediatric cases with one on a ventilator were reported.
