CHARLESTON -- Another eight people have died from the COVID-19 coronavirus including a 45-year-old man, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources Thursday said.
The deaths also include a 100-year-old man from Harrison County, the department said.
West Virginia's virus death toll since the pandemic started more than 30 months ago was at 7,487 residents on Thursday, the department said.
In addition to the 100-year old man and the 45-year-old man from Lewis County, the department confirmed the deaths of an 89-year-old woman from Kanawha County, a 71-year-old man from Mercer County, a 79-year-old woman from Logan County, a 76-year-old man from Berkeley County, a 66-year-old woman from Kanawha County and a 90-year-old woman from Berkeley County.
"As experts predict a difficult flu season, please help alleviate the potential stress on West Virginia's healthcare system by getting vaccinated against the flu as well as staying up-to-date on COVID-19 vaccination and boosters," Department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said.
The state reported 868 active COVID-19 cases statewide, a drop from the 912 reported on Wednesday. The department also received 255 new positive cases in the 24-hour period between Wednesday and Thursday.
Active cases in local counties on Thursday (Wednesday): Calhoun, 1 (1); Doddridge, 3 (3); Gilmer, 2 (1); Jackson, 11 (8); Pleasants, 2 (3); Ritchie, 0 (2); Roane, 5 (5); Tyler, 4 (4); Wetzel, 0 (0); Wirt, 0 (0); Wood, 35 (32).
Nine counties in the state are yellow and 45 are green on the County Alert System Map that is based on infection rates. Yellow is second lowest to green.
No counties in the region are yellow.
COVID-19 hospitalizations were at 154 patients across the state, nine less than on Tuesday.
Twenty-six patients are in an intensive care unit with eight on a ventilator. One pediatric case was reported on Wednesday.
