CHARLESTON -- The deaths of two Wood County residents were attributed to COVID-19 in Monday's virus update from the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources.
Two men, ages 83 and 78, were among six deaths reported since Friday. The others were a 73-year-old Kanawha County woman, an 84-year-old Pendleton County man, a 65-year-old Greenbrier County woman and a 79-year-old Boone County woman.
That brings the total number of deaths attributed to the virus since the pandemic's start in 2020 to 7,476. Of those, 364 have been in Wood County, third-highest in the state behind Kanawha (806) and Raleigh (387).
"The virus that causes COVID-19 has changed over time," DHHR Cabinet Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "Boosters are an important part of protecting yourself and your family from serious illness."
With 680 new cases reported over the weekend, there were 915 active cases around the state Monday, a dozen higher than Friday's 903.
Active cases in local counties Monday (Friday) were: Calhoun, 4 (3); Doddridge, 0 (2); Gilmer, 2 (5); Jackson, 9 (13); Pleasants, 2 (4); Ritchie, 4 (4); Roane, 5 (12); Tyler, 3 (5); Wetzel, 2 (2); Wirt, 0 (1); Wood, 47 (46).
Doddridge and Wirt two of three counties in the state with no active cases reported. The third was Pendleton County.
The County Alert System Map is mostly green, representing the lowest level of COVID spread based on the lower of infection rate or percentage of positive tests in the previous seven days. Calhoun County is the only one that is yellow, the second-lowest level, in this area and one of seven statewide.
Monday's DHHR update showed 176 people with COVID in West Virginia hospitals, down from 187 Friday. There were 36 in intensive care units and 12 on ventilators. There were also two pediatric hospitalizations.
