CHARLESTON -- Active COVID-19 coronavirus cases dropped over 50 from Tuesday to Wednesday, the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources said.
The department reported 721 statewide active cases as of Wednesday, a drop of 52 from the 773 on Tuesday. Active cases have been on a downward trend, although health officials suspect cases may rise again as colder weather arrives and people stay inside.
The state also reported 179 new positive cases were received in the 24-hour period between Tuesday and Wednesday mornings.
While Pleasants remain gold, mid level, on the County Alert System Map that is based on infection rates, Tyler and Ritchie and Gilmer counties are yellow, second lowest on the chart.
Eight counties in the state are yellow and the remainder are green.
Active cases in local counties on Wednesday (Tuesday) were: Calhoun, 1 (1); Doddridge, 3 (2); Gilmer, 7 (6); Jackson, 8 (8); Pleasants, 10 (11); Ritchie, 5 (4); Roane, 5 (5); Tyler, 5 (5); Wetzel, 5 (6); Wirt, 1 (1); Wood, 35 (35).
No deaths were reported between Tuesday and Wednesday. The death count since the pandemic began remains at 7,502.
Statewide hospitalizations were at 155 patients on Wednesday, up five from Tuesday, with 21 in an intensive care unit and eight on ventilators. Two pediatric cases with one on a ventilator were reported.
