CHARLESTON -- Wood County is now green, the lowest level on the County Alert System Map that is based on infection rates, as of Thursday.
The county, the largest in the Mid-Ohio Valley, has been yellow, second lowest.
Also green in this region are Wetzel, Tyler, Pleasants, Ritchie, Wirt, Calhoun, Roane and Gilmer. Ritchie, Gilmer and Tyler were yellow while Jackson was green on Wednesday.
Doddridge is yellow.
Twenty-seven counties were classified in the green on Thursday. No counties are orange or red, the highest levels of infection.
Wyoming, which upgraded to yellow on Wednesday, returned to gold, mid level, on Thursday.
Active COVID-19 cases statewide in West Virginia again dropped more than 60, the Department of Health and Human Resources said Thursday.
The department reported 1,659 active cases, down 63 from 1,723 in the 24-hour period between Thursday and Friday. Another 461 new cases were received since the last report on Thursday.
Active cases in local counties on Thursday (previous report) were: Calhoun 3 (3), Doddridge 5 (4), Gilmer 5 (5), Jackson 23 (18), Pleasants 1 (1), Ritchie 5 (7), Roane 14 (18), Tyler 11 (12); Wetzel 10 (10), Wirt 6 (22), Wood 56 (60).
Three more deaths were reported on Thursday, raising the since total to 7,382 attributed to COVID-19 since the pandemic started.
The state confirmed the deaths of a 72-year-old man from Kanawha County, a 66-year-old man from Monongalia County and a 90-year-old woman from Berkeley County.
"Every life lost leaves a hole in a family, a community, and our state," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "We offer our deepest sympathies to all who are mourning a loved one and encourage West Virginians to stay up to date on COVID-19 vaccines and boosters."
Hospitalizations dropped by seven to 280 between Wednesday and Thursday. Forty-three patients were in an intensive care unit and 13 were on ventilators, also fewer than were reported on Tuesday. Eight pediatric cases with two in an ICU were reported.
