CHARLESTON -- Active cases statewide in West Virginia rose by 171 between Wednesday and Thursday mornings, the Department of Health and Human Resources said on Thursday.
Active cases were 3,151 on Thursday, compared to 2,980 on Wednesday, according to the state. The state also received 1,109 new cases of the virus since the last update on Wednesday.
Fewer counties are green, the lowest level of spread, on the County Alert System Map. Twelve were green on Thursday compared to 15 on Wednesday.
Five counties are gold, mid-level, which includes Wetzel County in this region. Two counties in the region are green, Jackson and Wirt.
One county is orange, Hardy, second highest in terms of spread and infection. All other counties in the state are yellow, second lowest.
Current active cases in local counties (previous day) on Thursday were: Calhoun 13 (11), Doddridge 11 (10), Gilmer 13 (9), Jackson 29 (28), Pleasants 12 (11), Ritchie 10 (11), Roane 30 (28), Tyler 18 (17), Wetzel 48 (46), Wirt 5 (5), Wood 149 (131).
Another five deaths were reported in the 24-hour period between Wednesday and Thursday mornings, raising the death count to 7,291 residents since the pandemic began in 2020.
Deaths confirmed were a 79-year-old man from Wayne County, a 95-year-old man from Ohio County, a 71-year-old woman from Putnam County, a 94-year-old woman from Marion County and a 92-year-old woman from Hancock County.
Condolences were expressed by department Secretary Bill J. Crouch.
"To honor the lives of these West Virginians who have passed, I ask that you get vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19," Crouch said. "Our deepest sympathies are extended at this time of grief."
Hospitalizations were 309 patients statewide with 42 in an intensive care unit and 11 on ventilators. Nine pediatric patients were reported with three in an ICU.
The Division of Corrections reported 47 staff and 134 inmates have the virus. Two cases were reported each at the North Central Regional Jail and the St. Marys Correctional Center.
