CHARLESTON -- Active COVID cases dropped by five between Tuesday and Wednesday in West Virginia, the Department of Health and Human Resources reported Wednesday.
Statewide, the state reported 2,627 active cases, down from 2,632 on Monday. Cases were over 3,000 on Friday.
Active cases in local counties Wednesday (previous day) were: Calhoun, 7 (6); Doddridge, 3 (5); Gilmer, 19 (12); Jackson, 17 (13); Pleasants, 0 (0); Ritchie, 12 (13); Roane, 13 (16); Tyler, 4 (5); Wetzel, 24 (21); Wirt, 3 (16); and Wood, 120 (124).
All counties in the state are either green or yellow, first and second lowest in terms of virus spread, on the County Alert System Map. In this region, Jackson, Wirt, Roane, Doddridge, Pleasants and Tyler are green.
Fourteen counties in the state are green.
Four more residents have died from the virus since the Tuesday report, raising the death count to 7,257 in the pandemic.
The department has confirmed the deaths of a 90-year-old man from Marion County, a 79-year-old man from Taylor County, a 79-year-old man from Cabell County and an 80-year-old woman from Logan County.
"Each death of a West Virginian is a loss if felt by all," department Secretary Bill J. Crouch said. "As we extend our deepest sympathies to the loved ones, we encourage all residents to recognize the continued need for COVID vaccines and boosters."
Hospitalizations were at 345 statewide on Wednesday. Fifty-six people were in an intensive care unit and 13 were on ventilators.
Hospital resources begin getting impacted at 500 admissions, according to James Hoyer, director of the state's interagency task force on vaccines.
Ten pediatric patients were reported with three in an ICU and one on a ventilator.
The Division of Corrections reported 45 staff and 129 inmates have the virus. Eleven are at the North Central Regional Jail, two are at St. Marys Correctional Center and two are at the Parkersburg Community Corrections.
